‘Threads of Silk and Gold,’ Ornamental Textiles from Meiji Japan. Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the private view of this amazing exhibition. I haven’t seen embroidery quite like this before. The subtlety of texture and colour was extraordinary. I visited the exhibition a second time just to be able to take in all the different colour combinations and techniques. Here is a glimpse of the galleries. Dr Clare Pollard, the curator, also organised a study sessions which I went to and it was great to be able to handle the fabrics and look at background sample books. Many of the large pieces from the exhibition where loaned from a collection at the Kiyomizu-Sannenzaka Museum, Kyoto and had not been seen outside Japan before.
